After about six weeks of unusually fine weather, cold, showery conditions spoilt the opening-day activities for Canterbury i Cricket Association clubs

Selby, the former captain, will be team manager. Most of the other clubs had net practices, Lancaster Park’s under the guidance of its new club coach, David Trist. High School Old Boys’ had two matches at Christchurch Boys’ High School, against the first and second XI. Bumside-West University delayed opening-day matches until yesterday, when the senior team played a team from Fairfield, and the third grade side met the Burnside High School first eleven.
The week-end gave Sydenham and St Albans a chance to meet their new recruits from Britain. Kevin James, aged 19, an all-rounder from Middlesex, will be an asset to Sydenham, as will Duncan Wild and Bob Carter to St Albans.
Wild, aged IS, a lefthand batsman, and Carter, two years older and a right-hand batsman and seam bowler, are regular second XI players for Northamptonshire, although Carter has had a lew matches for the first team in the 1950 season.
