‘Sales tax hits small traders’
Sales tax and its anomalies are worrying the Canterbury and Westland Electrical Wholesalers’ Association. The association’s president (Mr E. R. Radcliffe) said the sales tax was having a detrimental effect on electrical wholesalers and was causing liquidity problems, especially for smaller traders. Mr Radcliffe said that at the moment the wholesalers paid the tax once a month; they acted as revenue collectors for the Government without any benefits for the extra work. The tax also affected' small retailers who had to buy from wholesalers and
pay extra sales tax while big stores could buy directly from the manufacturer. Manufacturers usually gave a bulk discount and, as sales tax was based on the value of goods sold, the big stores did not pay as much tax. However, the Minister of Customs (Mr Templeton) told the association that a Government inquiry would be set up to look into inequities of the sales tax system. Mr Radcliffe said that he favoured a system of valueadded tax and would present submissions along those lines.
