No vessel for Gulf

NZPA correspondent, New York The New Zealand frigate Waikato seems unlikely to be required to join an international naval force in the Persian Gulf. After briefings by the United States Central Intelligence Agency and the State Department, the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) said yesterday, “Present indications are that there will be no necessity for such a force.” He said that contingency planning, including discussions between a

Royal New Zealand Navy official and the United States Navy in Washington, would continue, “but there is. no requirement for any political decision by the New Zealand Government.” Mr Muldoon said that both the CJA. and the State Department believed that the Iran-Iraq war would be “a drawn-out affair.” However, he said that there was no imminent, or evident, threat to the Strait of Hormuz, through which much of the world’s oil passes.
