Auckland wins sevens

PA Palmerston North Auckland beat Wellington 7-0, in wet, blustery conditions at Palmerston North on Saturday, to become the new New Zealand seven-a-side rugby champion. In the five years the tournament has been running, only Marlborough and Manawatu have been the New Zealand titleholders. Auckland will now represent this country in the international Hong Kong

sevens tournament next March. . , In the first game of the tournament Hawkes Bay ran in three tries to Canterbury’s twot o win, 18-10. Taranaki pulled off a minor upset in the next match, when it scored a 12-6 victory over the eventual finalist, Wellington. The biggest upset, however, came later in the afternoon. Thames Valley, earlier trounced, 34-0, by Auckland, led Canterbury 12-4 at halftime in its round two clash

and held the front running until the final whistle to win, 16-14. And in round three, Cam terbury, after its shaky start to the day, pulled a deserved 12-10 win over Auckland mainly through the efforts of fast running by Brent Oetgen, who ran in three trise.

Auckland was the clear winner of Pool A, while Wellington with its superior try count over Otago, won Pool B.
