Firpo fit for fray
Firpo was not the fastest of the Riccarton trialists yesterday, but none of the others matched the star of the Tom Lalor stable for keenness.
Firpo was always keen to quicken for his race rider, Michael Mein, while running 800 on the plough. He returned 52.2 and 38.2 for the final 600.
The testing nature of Wingatui’s metric mile
should show Firpo to advantage in the D. P. Wilson Memorial tomorrow.
Sugar Time, another Riccarton hopeful for the Wilson Memorial, did her cause no harm when she sprinted 1200 m on the plough. She returned Imin 20.5 s for 1200, and an impressive 36.8 for the final 600. Uncle Tom led Crown Princess by half a length ending 600 in 38.2.
Uncle Tom has form fo place him high on the list of hopefuls for the second Members’ Maiden at Wingatui.
Star Order was doing his work smoothly while running 1400 in 1.35, the last 600 in 40.4. The 1979 New Zealand Cup winner will probably be seen out next in the Rangiora Cup on Labour Day. The Chairman sprinted 600 comfortably in 38.6. Dave Kerr plans to start this good galloper on this three-year-old career at the Winton meeting on October 13. La Figlia recorded 37 for 600, and did her work attractively. Shin soreness has delayed a start to her spring racing, but it should be all plain sailing from now on for La Mer’s close relation. Early Dance, whose programme has been interrupted by a cold, went about her work with a will while running 600 in 37.2.
