Alfa-Datsun?

The Italian Prime Minister, Mr Cossiga, has conditionally approved a joint car-malting venture between Italy’s Alfa Romeo and Japan’s Nissan Motor Company. The Alfa-Nissan project will produce 60,000 me-dium-sized cars a year from a new factory t° be built in the economically depressed south of Italy.

Mr Cossiga’s decision ended months of delays. The project had split the Cabinet and was strongly opposed by Fiat, Italy’s largest private car-maker. Fiat, itself faring a major sales crisis, and senior economics ministers argued against the stateowned Alfa helping a Japanese competitor to gain a bridgehead in the European markets.
