Rise of 68c
Apart from coffee, the items in our shopping basket mostly continued to rise in price, and the total cost of the basket is up 68c this month. Although coffee was found on special for much less, the lowest non-spe-cial price of $2.08 is used in the basket. Sunday’s rise in the cost of bread accounts for 60c of the 68c increase. Loaves rose between 1c and 3c, and rolls and buns 2c a packet. The price of cheese rose about 10 per cent about a month ago, and another
increase is in the wind as domestic prices follow the trends of export prices. Griffins and Aulesbrooks are enlarging some 225 g biscuit lines to 250 g, and prices will rise proportionately. The 210 ml bottles of Robinsons rose hip syrup have been discontinued, and the drink is now sold in 500 ml bottles. But while the size of the bottle has increased nearly 2.5 times, the price has only doubled. The maximum retail price of the 500 ml bottles is $3.03.
