Be Sly in dashing trial for Ashburton Stakes

By

G. K. YULE

Be Sly emerged as an upset chance in the Ashburton Flying Stakes on Saturdav when he was successful at the Addington trials yesterday. He paced the 2400 m in 3min 265, with his last 800 m in 59.95, and the last 400 m in 30.75.

Be Sly was always fairly handily placed by Bill Denton. He took charge early in the run home and held off a strong late challenge from Scotch Tar by a length. Be Sly has been off the scene since April, but he has done plenty of work and looks ready to make a bold bid on Saturday. Scotch Tar settled behind five horses, with Slim Dykman soon having him well placed on the outside. He was not asked for a serious effort to cut into the advantage'of Be Sly over the final stages. Canis Minor, still last at the 800 m, moved up wide from that point and was not disgraced when he finished fourth, three lengths from the winner.

Crow Bar was close by fifth, shading Sun Seeker, which could easily surprise on Saturday.

Lord Module started in behind the field and swung round at barrier rise. He must have lost 50m. Kevin Williams kept him to the rails and he made ground strongly in the straight to be only five lengths from the winner in seventh place.

Lord Module was timed over his last 2400 m in 3min 5.45, his last 800 m in about Imin, and his final 400 m in little worse than 30s. He will only have to move off reasonably from 10m to win on Saturday. Kotare Hunter showed sharpness to wear down the pacemaker, Lomondu Host, and beat him by half a length, going away in the race for three-year-olds. It ■was an .impressive run. He took 2min 41s for the 2000 m, the last 800 m in Imin o.Bs, and the final 400 m in 31.25.

Super Byrd, driven by Bob Nyhan, came on steadily for (third four lengths back, shading Special Appeal, with Locarno’s half-brother, Fara-

san, making ground for fifth, shading Jimmy’s Gift. Celevale Bay showed that he was ready to make a bold showing in his first start for the season when he led practically* throughout the event for C 4 to C 6 pacers. He is in the Seafield Handicap, the final leg of the T.A.B. treble.

Celevale Bay set a sound pace and ran on too strongly for Daylight Express to win by half a length. He recorded 3min 30.4 s for the 2600 m, the last 800 m in 59.85, and the final 400 m in 30.65.

Daylight Express, a candidate for the President’s Handicap, ran on quite well for second, but was not as impressive as D’Oir Favori, which finished under a hold half a length further away. D’Or Favori looks in great heart and should extend her record on Saturday. Big Idea made up ground for fourth, ahead of Orfeo and Dainty Judy. Black Jet, a C 5 pacer, was, not surprisingly, too good for the field in the race for C2 and C 3 pacers. He came on well to beat El Regale by half a length, with a similar margin to Mark Aaron, which was followed by False Regal, which made up ground, No Regrets and Tawhai Blue.

Black Jet paced the 2600 m in 3min 30.25, the last 800 m in Imin 2.85, and the final 400 m in 31.65.

. Coastal ong, which broke with 1300 m left, soon recovered and won the race for trotters quite comfortably from Quick March, which looks the likely winner of the Chertsey Handicap at Ashburton. Pumpkin, racing in a hood, trotted better than she has at other trials this season, to take third, followed by Elijah and Game Mander.

Conscript put plenty of dash into his finish to shade

Joe Lord by half a neck in the race for CO and Cl pacers. Young Tala shaped pleasingly in third place, ahead of Furness Lad and Golden Romeo.
