Power protest awaits Minister

The Minister of Energy (Mr Birch) may find himself attending more than one power conference when he arrives in Christchurch today to address the Electrical Supply Authorities Association annual meeting.

A “counter - conference” has been arranged by power protest groups to coincide with Mr Birch’s arrival at the conference, where he is expected to announce increases in. power charges, effective from next April.

The Campaign Power Poll group, the North-East

Christchurch Energy Group and two other protest groups will hold their conference outside the Christchurch Town Hall in Kilmore Street at 12.30 p.m. People interested in attending were advised to bring their own chairs, said Mr M. McNabb, an organiser of the Energy Group. “We will take the opportunity to expose the injustice of the pricing policy on electricity and the dangers of the second aluminium smelter,” Mr McNabb said.
