Coal protest looms at port

Another coal export protest looms at Lyttelton. On July 28, about 90 people, including members of the Campaign Against Foreign Control and the Seamen’s Union held a peaceful protest against the initial shipment of Buller coal aboard the Sunda Career.

The Bengal Career is expected to take on the'isecond 35,000-tonne shipment for Japan on October 8, and the protest might become more of a boycott. The South Island secretary of the Seamen’s Union (Mr

T. E. Stuart) said yesterday that a protest which would be “much more than a demonstration” was being considered by his union, other Unions, and other organisations. ,

At the previous demonstration, objectors said the coal could be better used in'New Zealand. The Seamen’s Union said that if the coal exports were to be regular, New Zealand seamen should be aboard the vessels or, alternatively, New Zealand ships should be used.
