Replacement for cruise liner
The Greek cruise ship Rasa Sayang which caught fire and sank at Piraeus, near Athens, in August, has been replaced for South Pacific cruising by the 10,000tonne Aqua Marine, formerly the Marco Polo.
Greek police and insurance assessors are investigating .the fire and sinking of the Rasa Sayang. The liner was being refitted for cruising in the South Pacific from November. Several hundred New Zealanders had their holiday plans disrupted by the fire.. The Rasa Sayang had been charted to the London-based C.T.C. Lines for four years.
The. C.T.C. New Zealand director, Mr Les Goss, said that since the fire and sinking of the vessel, allegations had been made of smoke bombs being found in the affected area. It is believed that the vessel was under-insured by the Greek ship owner, who is reputed to have lost more than $1 million.
The Aqua Marine is undergoing a $5 million refit in Hong Kong. It will carry 500 adult-only passengers and will start cruising from Sydney in late December on the Rasa Sayang’s schedule. It will call at Auckland in February. ' .
