Profitable campaign for Paddy Boy

? Special, correspondent ...New Plymouth ' Paddy Boy has had little luck on his side, but the Hawera colt is paying his !way during . what seems (likely to be a lengthy camrign in Australia. Since arriving in Australia ,on June 4, Paddy Boy which :is being campaigned by ms ? art-owner and trainer, P. G. ayne, has raced three times 'and earnt $16,100. A win in ■the Adelaide Guineas is the pick of his runs. Paddy Boy. arrived in Sydney and moved to Southport where he was stabled at the ■thoroughbred . international complex, which Payne describes as an outstanding facility. The combination (also spent time at Coirs Harbour. , . f In spite of not having raced for nine weeks ana having much of his prepa-

ration restricted to sand tracks, Paddy Boy pleased with a strong run for third in the 1600 m Marlboro Stakes. At his next start when "again not at his peak” Paddy Boy produced a dogged finish for third. The winner’s time of Imin 9.6 s for the 1350 m was only a tenth of a second outside the juvenile track record. This was at Eagle Farm.' Paddy Boy and Payne then set off for Ballarat, “a marathon journey” compensated quickly by the colt settling down and thriving in “ideal training facilities.” Payne said he was confident Paddy Boy was going to be hard to beat in the Adelaide Guineas in spite of not having raced for five weeks, and he said he thought the win was the easiest of the colt’s career

and, although he was then in top order, it was decided to wait for the set weight three-year-old races. As these races arrived so did a “filthy cold” and until this clears Payne is unable to make any definite plans for the colt but added it was unlikely Paddy Boy would be fit enough to run in the Caulfield Cup next month. During his time in Australia Paddy Boy has been the subject of several big offers but no business has been completed. ?■■;■.
