Peake Compton, suspended
PA Wellington Both New Zealand’s top jockeys, Bruce Compton and David Peake, were suspended at Tauranga on Saturday. The two riders, Compton from Matamata and Peake from Takanini, are having a great tussle for the lead on the jockey’s table. After Ruakaka last Friday, Compton led with 13 wins against Peake’s 12. The positions were maintained with each getting a win at Tauranga, but through the suspensions Peake has secured an advantage — he has been put out for one race day. Compton for two.
Both riders were given their suspensions for careless riding. Compton, on Bold Fripon in the Rangitaiki Handicap, was found by the judicial committee to have caused interference to Bold Philae when angling out to obtain a run 300 m from the finish. Peake, the rider of Scimitar, was found, after the Goldsmith Handicap, to have allowed his mount to move in near the 800 m, causing Taipanui to be forced on to Derbin, which lost a considerable amount of ground. The rider of Travolta in the Ohope Handicap, P. L. Calkin, was suspended for one race day also after being found guilty of careless riding, which caused interference to Looking Up with 200 m to run.
