New Zealand and Kampuchea

Sir, —In his article, “Kampuchean rivals for recognition,” (“The Press," September 17), Stuart McMillan writes: “After all, if Vietnam can invade another country, install a government of its own, and then the inter-

national community accepts that government, who is safe anywhere in the world from an ambitious neighbour?” Nos uch scruples agitate the A.S.E.A.N. foreign ministers and their patron, the United States Government, over the Tanzanian invasion of Uganda that deposed Idi Amin. The London "Observer” is a journal not noted for its sympathy towards socialist regimes. Therefore, the testimony of its correspondent Brian Eads

on Kampuchea today, carries added weight ("The Press,” September 12). His final paragraph must cause New Zealanders the gravest disquiet that their Government continues to support the Pol Pot regime: "It comes as a shock to them (the Kampucheans) that, in the name of ‘legitimacy’ some twothirds of the world’s governments still support the monsters who inhabit their nightmare."—Yours, etc.,

, M. CREEL. September 18, 1980
