National boxing starts
PA Invercargill Followers of the sport were treated to some fine boxing in the preliminary bouts of the New Zealand boxing championships in Invercargill last night. But eight boxers originally entered did not turn up when the official weigh-in was held in the morning. Some boxers were also not at their required weights and the programme had to be readjusted, with the first session, scheduled for the afternoon, being cancelled M. ' Kenny (Wellington) recorded the first knock-out of the championships in round one of his intermediate middleweight
bout with K. Zeigler (Auckland). In an exchange of blows, Zeigler was forced to take a compulsory count after Kenny had landed a hard blow to the face. Other results:— Featherweight.— R. Pittman (Timaru) beat T. Attwood (Timaru), unanimous decision. Lightweight.—R.’ Smith (Otago) beat M. Sione (Auckland), majority decision. Light middleweight. — T. Tuitape (Canterbury) beat B. Jackson (Wellington). unanimous decision; K. Pyne (Canterbury) beat D. Dalton (Wanganui), majority decision; M. Tuhega (Auckland) beat R. Newton (Southland), majority decision.
