Ban on Qantas work
Qantas expects its international flights to be “reasonably close to normal” tomorrow, in spite of a decision by combined airport unions to ban normal mechanical servicing for the Boeing 747 jumbos. Airport unions, led by . the Australasian Society of Engineers and with A.C.T.U. backing, are to black ban mechanical work on any Qantas flight arriving in Australia between 6 a.m. tomorrow and 6 a.m. on Thursday. They are taking the action in retaliation for Qantas’s rise of staff labour during a recent airport stoppage involving security officers.
“Passengers’ baggage will be removed from the aircraft and refuse, catering, and other non-mechanical servicing will be provided,” said a Qantas spokesman. “Out-bound aircraft . will be unaffected, provided the aircraft had not landed within the 24-hour period?’ The Qantas spokesman said the airline was now preparing “alternate plans” to deal with the bans, and expected "reasonably close-to-normal” services tomorrow. A Qantas spokesman said that if the work bans .went ahead, most other international airlines could be affected because their aircraft are also serviced by Qantas staff. ; .
