All Black centre forced to withdraw

PA Auckland Gary Cunningham, the All Black centre, has been forced to withdraw from the All Black rugby team to tour North America and Wales next month. Last evening he underwent exploratory surgery in Auckland Hospital for a ruptured medial ligament in his right leg. If the ligament is ruptured, as surgeons fear, Cunningham’s leg is likely to spend about six weeks in plaster after corrective surgery. Even if the ligament is not ruptured the leg is still likely to be put in plaster.. Cunningham injured the leg in the match against North Auckland last Saturday. His Auckland teammate, Tim . Twigden, may be the one to take his place when the replacement is announced by the New Zealand Rugby Union today. The other likely candidate is Fred Woodman, the North Auckland wing, who had good games for the Maoris and the New Zealand XV against the Fijians, If Twigden wins selection it will be in almost’ identical circumstances to last year’s tour of England and Scotland when he was called in to replace Bruce Robertson, who suffered a knee injury. Twigden is probably the front runner for the vacant position with more experience than Woodman as well as his ability to play at either centre or wing.

He played two tests foti the All Blacks in Australia earlier this year.
