Proposed dump

Sir, — Would Mr Mckenzie, chairman Christchurch Metropolitan Refuse Committee, care to comment on the following: 1. The environmental impact report prepared by his committee states that the true cost' of this scheme, with loans over 20 years, is $16.7 million not nearly $lO million as we are told. Do the ratepayers of the Christchurch city area realise that their council will be paying 60 per cent of this scheme if it is implemented? 2. Traffic volumes around the Ruru Road, Bromley and Haytons Road, Sockburn, Transfer stations will be week days, 340 a day; and week-ends, 1040 a day, subject to substantial increases on fine week-ends. 3. The report also says: “No foreshore road from New Brighton to Spencerville should be contemplated,” and goes on to say how this is a feature which is essential to the landscape management plan. So why use Bower Avenue as planned? — Yours, etc., T. L. HURST August 14, 1980

[Mr J. M. McKenzie, chairman Christchurch Metropolitan Refuse Disposal Committee, replies: “1. The scheme is currently costed at $B.B million. The environmental impact report stressed the wisdom of doing this work from revenue and- not from loan. The source of funds is a matter for each individual council and the majority, is being provided from revenue.

Christchurch city also contributes 60 per cent of the refuse. 2. The traffic volumes represent but a small part of the traffic on these industrial roads. 3. No road is proposed between Spencerville and New Brighton. Bower Avenue as a legal road stops at Rothesay Road and thereafter a private driveway within Bottle Lake Plantation will service the landfill, to which Bower Avenue is the most practical access. There will be no access by the general public to the landfill. Discussions are being held with both the Waimairi County and the Christchurch City Council on long-term alternatives.”]
