Local play
Michael Convey, an old Yorkshire Irishman, has travelled from Britain to New Zealand to see his daughter Mary, his last surviving child. During his visit, a long, difficult, and bitter conversation uncovers the truth of their relationship, through the irreconcilable extremes of Irish religious prejudice. An Auckland writer, Russell Haley, was spurred to write this, his second radio play, by an
incident in his own childhood. He has set the story in suburban Mount Eden, but in a curious way the play is a microcosm of the j religious conflicts that di-! vide Ireland and which continue to divide Ireland’s children. Christopher Hampson produced “Three Priests for Michael . Convey” for Radio New Zealand. Mary is played by Joanna Derrill and Michael Convey by Antony Groser. Concert programme, 9.33 p.m.
