Women’s jails crowded
PA Wellington Overcrowding of women’s prisons is still a problem in New Zealand, in spite of a drop last year in female inmates, reports the Justice Department. Consequently there is a need for more facilities for female offenders.
“The problem in respect of women inmates, which was noted last year, has continued, and facilities to cope with them have become a matter of some urgency,” the report says. Crowding which is unacceptable to staff and. inmates still occurs at Mount Eden women’s division and the department wants urgently to establish a new female institution in the Auckland area.
The female jail population rose to a peak of 159 in October last year but dropped to 128 in March this year.
While female inmate, numbers have fallen, the number of males in New Zealand penal institutions has increased. At the end of March . there were 2738 males in penal institutions, compared with 2547 at the same time last year, the report says.
