Troubles at Tauranga?
PA Tauranga Predictions of severe consequences for the Port of Tauranga and job redundancy in the road transport industry have been made in the wake of the announcement that the log trade between New Zealand and japan has been suspended.
The suspension results from a breakdown in negotiations between Japanese buyers and the Forest Service. Tauranga, by far the largest export point for logs, could lose an important part of its throughput if the trade suspension continues. “We must be very con-
cerned about the suspension, and hope it will not be a long-term move,” said the chairman of the Bay of Plenty Harbour Board (Mr J. W. Syme). Total log exports through the port were expected to be about 800,000 tonnes for the present financial year.
