‘Operators hit hard by inflation’

Costs for the transport operator were climbing faster than they could be recovered, Mr Johnson told the conference.

Inflation was hitting transport operators hard because- of the industry’s dependence on imported fuels, increasing vehicle prices, road-user charges, wages and high interest rates on borrowed capital, he said.

- '.‘The concern with which carriers view the clearly inadequate recovery of costs through rates is shown by the number of remits which have been passed on to the conference dealing with the rate recovery procedure,” Mr Johnson said.

An approach to the Ministry of Transport on rate recovery would probably be made because of the conference, he said.
