An exciting future
As chairman of the Christchurch City Council public utilities committee I should like to take this opportunity of welcoming delegates to the Eelctric Supply Authorities Association conference. Associated with the E.S.A.A. conference is an Electrical Trade Exhibition “ Choose Electric ’ 80 ” organised by the Electrical Development Association. Never before has energy in its various forms played such' an important part in our everyday lives, and never before has it received so much consideration or publicity. Electricity is available 24 hours a day, it is clean and efficient and without
adequate supplies of electricity industry and commerce would grind to a halt and home life and business would suffer. It can safely be said that electricity consumers have never had a better servant in the business or the home. Because of our unusual climatic conditions the greatest problem ■ which we face in Christchurch during' the winter months is that of pollution, and for Christchurch residents electricity is the cheapest non-polluting domestic fuel available, the cost of electricity being approximately 60 per cent of the cost of coal burnt in a normal open fireplace,; the chief culprit. in our air pollution problems. Electricity in its varied applications has an exciting future and I offer my congratulations to the organisers and contributors taking part in “Choose Electric ’80” and commend it to all as an exhibition ■ of considerable interest.
