“Going home to starve”
Sir, — The article from the “Economist” (“The Press,” September 6) is very much out of date so may I bring your readers up to date. Proposals called “joint venture enterprises” which were made by the Van Der Walt Consolidation Commission are on the drawing board as alternatives and supplementary efforts in an attempt to make the homelands more economically viable. Major installations and projects, including two harbours, in both the homelands and white South Arica are earmarked to come under joint black and white control. This change in emphasis on' which the Prime Minister, Mr P. W. Botha, first lifted the wraps on September 1, 1980 will affect projects financed not only -by governments but also those of private enterprise. They are expected to cover almost every sphere of economic activity, from shops to mines to harbours to game reserves and are referred to by the Prime Minister as shared economic regional development areas. — Yours, etc., S. CHAMBERS. September 12, 1980.
