Springbok tour
Sir, —Surely there should be some way in which those of us who detest the. idea of a Springbok tour can stand up and be counted. Might not the Churches be the best people to organise a petition?—Yours, etc., BRIAN PRIESTLEY. September 18, 1980.
Sir, —Your correspondents, D. J. Dumergue, V. H. Anderson, Anne Thompson etc. seem keen to discredit antiapartheid supporters by claiming selective morality has been used against South Africa. White South Africans have one of the highest standards of living in the world, because their economy is built on slave labour. South Africa is the undisputed world leader in the oppression of racial groups, and is unique in the number of comprehensive racist laws on its statutes. Even if there were other countries as bad as this, their existence would not absolve South Africa’s blame. If the correspondents are deeply concerned about the Soviet Union or Aboriginals or just paranoid about communism, they should do something constructive about it, instead of knocking the motives of anti-apartheid campaigners. Congratulations to Bishops Ashby and Reeves, and the Marist brothers for speaking out against the Springbok tour. —Yours, etc., JOHN SMALL. September 18, 1980.
