Bishop stays as patron
I The Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch (the Most Rev. B. P. Ashby) will continue as patron of the Marist Rugby Club. Bishop Ashby had threatened to resign as patron of the club if the Springboks) were invited to New Zea-1 land. He clarified his present! position before making pr- ! sentations at the club’s annual prize-giving last evening.
Bishop Ashby said that the club had asked” him to remain as patron and had invited him to present his views on the tour to the club’s annual meeting in November.
“The seriousness with which the (Roman Catholic)
(Bishops of New Zealand and (myself regard the tour issue; jis matched by the serious-[ ness of the club in wanting! (me to stay on as patron,”) 'said Bishop Ashby. “I there:fore plan to remain in office) [and take the opportunity to J put forward my views at the) annual meeting.” I
li The president of the Mitt! siist club (Mr N. i Blanchfield) said that he was' : J delighted that Bishop Ashby j was remaining as patron and he considered that having (him speak at the annual (meeting would allow for a' (full and frank discussion on. •the tour issue. ./■
