Liz Douglas set for third national title

PA Wanganui A sizzling three-under-par ■ 70 by the international , player, Liz Douglas, at the j testing Belmont course in Wanganui yesterday, has : rocketed the Invercargill ; woman into top contention for her third national | women’s stroke-play golf ; championship. Relishing the calmer condi- I tions, Mrs Douglas improved sharply on her first round 79 1 to post a most presentable 36-hole aggregate of 149 to share the halfway lead with a fellow New Zealand representative, Brenda Rhodes, of Te Puke. Miss Rhodes, aged 22, matched the course par of 73 on a second circuit to join Mrs Douglas in securing a one-stroke advantage over Jocelyn Glanfield, of Auckland.

Mrs Glanfield, aged 40, who is perhaps the biggest hitter in the 88-strong field, pieced together a second 75 to be still right in line for the Mellsop Cup, which narrowly eluded her in Dunedin last year. - The third place is shared by the Otago University student, Jan Scandrett, and Titirangi’s Sue Bunt, who made a smart forward move yesterday to cut nine shots off her opening round score with a splendid one-under-par 72. Alone in sixth place is Huapai’s Alison Hasey (78, 76—154) while the Manawatu veteran, Jean Whitehead, the winner of the stroke-play title on six previous occasions, is in seventh equal place with the Nelson teen-ager, Debbie Rendall, after a splendid second round of 75 for a 155 aggregate.
