Pilot dies
The young hang-glider pilot who crashed on the Cashmere Hills on Thursday died in the intensivecare unit at Christchurch Hospital yesterday after* noon. He was Neil Embry MacKereth, aged 21, a student, of 17 Eversleigh Street, St Albans. j , Mr MacKereth had been unconscious with severe head injuries since his hang-glider plunged into a steep' hillside above Worsleys Spur about 3.30 p.m. on Thursday. He was learning the sport under the guidance
of an instructor when he crashed. The police said Mr MacKereth had ]ust taken off on his third run and had reached a height of about 50ft when he had got into difficulties and had veered back into the hillside. The police have called in investigators from the Civil Aviation Division who will examine the wreckage of the hang-glid-er for clues to the cause of the crash. They will also visit the scene of the accident and interview witnesses.
