Relining your shower

One of today's most popular handyman tasks is the building of a shower cabinet or the relining of your existing shower. If you have handyman aspirations, there are not as many jobs as straightforward or more rewarding after you have finished than a sparkling, new shower cabinet — if you have read the instructions.

Let us assume, for this exercise, that it is a relining job; the old linings have deteriorated and you would like to give the cabinet a new look. First of all, of course, you will want to choose the material. Today, usually, it would be one of the popular pre-finished hardboards, such as Seratone or Riotone.

These boards are all designed , for what are known as “wet areas.” In other words, they have a virtually complete resistance to water penetratiori. with its consequent deterioration. In some cases, this water resistance is brought about by the use of a backing of oil-tem-pered hardboard; in others, by a space waterproofing treatment applied to the back of the board. -However, even so you must follow the manufacturers’ instructions to ensure that the finished iob will prove satisfactory throughout its life. ' If you are ready to give it a go, the first thing to do is to come to the Building Centre. There, you will see

examples of completed shower cabinets, a wide selection of colours and full instructions to go about the job.

N.Z. Forest Products, the makers of Riotone and Seratone, produce an excellent instruction manual covering every aspect of your job and Laminex Industries also provides full working instructions. The Building Centre staff can also assist in indicating points to watch. If you are’ thinking about building yourself a shower cabinet or relining the bathroom, kitchen, shower or . laundry, go to your Building Centre first. They can even put you into contact with qualified tradesmen in case you feel you would rather thave the job done by an expert.
