Akaroa church hall for sale
Tenders have been invited for the purchase of Akaroa’s Anglican Parish. Hall and section for conversion to a residential property. The hall is on an elevated 773 sq m section on the beach front between the Post Office and the main wharf. It is about 60 years old, 15m by 9m, wooden, and has an iron roof. There are two toilets, a kitchen and a large room with an elevated “musical comer” inside.
The property is zoned residential and the 1976 Government valuation is $26,500. The condition is descrbed as fair. Tenders close on Friday, October 31. “We are disposing of the hall to build a lounge next to the Anglican Church in Rue Balguerie,” the Rev. Donald Williams said yesterday. “Tha lounge will be more useful because the hall is about a quarter of a mile
away. It has had a lot of community use over the years but is not used much today.
“We are more concerned with catering for the. work on the spot at the church rather than having to leave and go up to the .hall for our formal and informal sessions,” he said. “I suppose many years ago there was a bigger congregation, but now 60 per cent of the houses in Akaroa are holiday homes. However, the basic reason for selling is to be able to build the lounge and cater for the young people at the church during church times.” It was hoped to get more for the property than the Government valuation, and if the right amount was not offered, the sale would not go ahead. The church would come up with some other idea for the property, Mr Williams said.
