The average level of prices at the. opening wool sales of the present season in Canterbury was quite close to that of a year ago. Greasy wool sold at the first Christchurch sale of the new season; on August 15 averaged 238.53 c per kg. wool was 4.17 c behind the first sale in that centre last year. At the Christchurch sale last month the average price per bale was $357.70 for. a 149.96 kg bale. A total of 16,196 bales containing 2,428,804 kg of wool sold for a total of $5,793,345.49. The bale average at ’Timaru was $359.19 and the gross proceeds from the sale of 19363 bales containing 2,8 69,03 4 kg was $7,134,673.28.
