A St John ambulanceman and passers-by attend to a youth who escaped injury when a length of steel pipe fell two floors and struck him on the head in Gloucester Street yesterday. The youth, Clay, Paviell, aged 19, was walking on, the footpath outside the Dominion Hotel about 2.15 p.m. when the accident occurred. A piece of pipe, about 5 cm in diameter and more than 180 cm (6ft) long,

plunged two floors from where workmen were dismantling a fire escape on the front of the hotel, and struck him a glancing blow on the back of the head. The picture below shows where the pipe fell from.

He was put on a special stretcher-and taken by St John ambiance to Christchurch Hospital. He was treated and ' discharged, according to a hospital spokesman.
