The most important factors in choosing where to buy were the freshness of the fish, the cleanliness and smell of the shop, and personal service. The most common complaint against fish bought was “lack of -freshness,” and second was the presence of bones. Out of 247 of the households, 62 per cent ’disliked the preparation problems they associated with cooking fish, while 32 per cent disliked the smell of fish cooking.
More than, half the total of 376 households agreed with the statement, “Fish is better for you than meat,” but only 40 per cent agreed that it was better value for money than meat. Threequarters felt that fish was worth eating only when it was very fresh. At the meeting, Mr David Sanders, marketing consultant of Jaybel Nichimo in Auckland and proprietor of Akaroa Fisheries, said one of the ways to improve the fish market was to promote frozen fish. That caught at the
peak of the season could be frozen and sold when high prices lessened demand later on. This would mean less overseas funds for the nation as the surplus during the season was exported at present, but the industry should be looking after its own interests in New Zealand, he said.
