Auckland neo-natal problems
Sir, — I was staggered by the parsimonious attitude of Mr Gair (“The Press,” September 9). National Women’s Hospital provides rhesus services to the rest of the Dominion and has been a world leader in neo-natal research. Any airlift to the provinces jeopardises babies, and any Auckland woman who was exiled to Christchurch is a world apart from family and support; not only is it impractical, it Is inhumane. Babies are not seasonal. Auckland has the only acceptable on-site 24hour call service for medical skills concentrating entirely on neo-nates and any comparison with other units is ludicrous. It is ironic that now women who once flocked to Auckland with rhesus babies, are seeing an airlift out; If a 26-week old baby is the only chance at the age of 35, too right people should try hard; it is not pioneering. More money, more staff. — Yours, etc., K GREGSON. September 9, 1980.
