Rise in bus fares

Christchurch Transport Board bus fares will rise 11.9 per cent from Septem.'ber>29.' • This means that the main fares of 25c, 40c, and 50c will rise by about sc. The increases have been forced because of the alleged abuse of the board’s staff sickness scheme and the suspension of earless days. Board members heard at a meeting yesterday that estimates for the 1980-81 financial year had been overspent by $430,212. The chairman of the board’s policy and finance committee (Mr M. O. Holdsworth) said that the removal of the earless day restriction had cost the board an extra $227,480, but this was beyond the board’s control. In his report, Mr Holdsworth said that after the changed provision for sick pay/ which meant workers no longer had to produce medical certificates for sick leave, the estimated cost would be $160,000. “There remains the suspicion that the system is being abused, and the unions are co-operating with the board in checking this point,” said Mr Holdsworth.
