Mission denies killing Paraguay Indians
NZPA-Reuter New York Allegations that hundreds of Paraguayan Indians are subjected to manhunts leading to death in efforts to convert them to Christianity were denied yesterday, in :he United States and Britain. The allegations were made by the British-based Survival International, which works for the survival of aboriginal people. The organisation accused the Florida-based New Tribes Mission of rounding up nomad Ayoreo Indians in western Paraguay and herding them into refugee-like camps where many are said to have died because of- in-
humane living conditions. Mr Les Pederson, a board member of the mission interviewed in Wisconsin, described the charges as “bald-faced. lies.’’ A British branch. ,of - the. mission also denied .the allegations. Survival International’s charges were supported by the Paraguayan Committee for Human Rights. The mission said the British Foreign Office had investigated its. work in Paraguay earlier and had said: “The mission does -not appear to be forcing itself or its) ’ religion, upon these people as. the Indians' are free to use it;as they wish,”- .]
