Late sport Perrott to retire
PA Wellington Rebecca Perrott last evening announced her retirement from competitive pool swimming. After six years of almost continuous training and competition she had had enough, she said. “I don’t like competing any more: you get so nervous beforehand,” said the 1 9 7 8 Commonwealth Games 200 m freestyle champion. “With all the pressure there seems to be now I am no longer enjoying it the way I used to. Feeling like that, there is not much point carrying on.
“The best part was coming from nowhere and going to the top. Every time you swam you would improve your time,” Miss Perrott said. “It has become much harder. Instead of improving by seconds you have to make a great
effort to chip a fraction off here and there/’ Miss Perrott, aged 19, of Wellington, will divert her attention to surf life-sav-ing. She is in the process of joining the Lyall Bay club.
