Young swimmers in the spotlight

One of the outstanding individuals was Kara Taumaunu. who won four .events in the urider-16 boys* age group. The powerfully built Wliarenui swimmer won all his races easily, and his superiority* was clearly shown in the individual medley over eight lengths, of the pool. , •■ i --'. .' Taumaunu- went ; clear on,.the. butterfly leg and increased Iris lead with . each; different ,disoipline. He eventually. wdnslbX 18s, and was almost a , length>of the pool clear of the second: place-getter, Paul Matson,. ;of Wellington. - . . , : *. The senior men’s races*, were* well-shared, Gregor MacFarlane (Otagol proving the most versatile. He won the 100 m fresstyle and butterfly races.-ahd had the edge on Mark Cockloft (Eastern Districts) at the -finish of the medley. .*■ ■ '-V.-' Honours were also evenly-dis-tributed in the under-16 girls , races. There were-four different winners of the 'various stroke's; and that caused an. exciting finish to the medley.'The freestyle winner, Jennifer Queen* <Wharanui), and her. clubmate: Susan Willis, who . had won the but, terfly over 100 m, : had a sterling battle, Miss Queen touching first. They were separated by only Q 3S ’ •■’■'.'l i'-V' ; •. r ’ Bruce Waugh (Whafenui) did not win one of the separate strokes, but he showed that he was adept in each discipline by making no race of, the medly. He won by 10s from Mark Haimona (Wellington), who had won the backstroke and butterfly events. ’ Sarah Berryman . (Wellington) and' Jane Bishop (New Brighton) each had two successes in the under-14 girls’ grade, arid Deborah Small (Wharenui) was the' leading swimmer in the under-12 section. *; : .. _ . ' . ■ . Brett - Lyons (New Brighton), after finishing second in the freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke races, had his reward with a convincing victory in the under-12 boys’ medley.
