Roi Lear dead

PA Wellington Roi Lear, the highestpriced thoroughbred stallion imported into New Zealand, died suddenly on Thursday night at the Ardsley Stud, Masterton. Bred in France, Roi Lear was the champion French three-year-old colt of 1973 and won three of, his only four starts, amassing stake money of $275,667. He stood at stud in both England and Ireland before he was brought to New Zealand in 1977 and syndicated by a group of breeders for approximately $590,000. He died in his stall on Thursday night from meningitis. His first New Zealandbred foals are due to race this season and he had a full complement of wellbred mares for the. coming breeding season. His stud fee was $4OOO. Mr Jim Wallace, studmaster at Ardslev Stud, said that Roi Lear’s death was a tragic blow to New Zealand thoroughbred breeding, especially at this time of the season.
