Crawling record

NZPA Sydney A Sydney man, Mike Steed, was tempted to give up at 3 a.m. on Saturday, but seven hours and 29 minutes later he had broken the world long-distance crawling record.

Since 10 p.m. on Thursday he had been crawling around Manly Oval with only five minutes break every hour in his attempt to beat the 25mile (about 40km) record set late last year by an American.

At 12.29 a m. on Saturday he had passed that mark by half a mile, and the Guinness Book of Records was notified. He. said it was. worth the effort; it raised SNZ3S4O for the Royal Alexandra Hospital- for children at Camperdown in Sydney. He said that despite many layers of padding, his hands and knees were badly cut and blistered. All he wanted to do now was to sleep for a week. . ’
