Victorian racing to be probed
NZPA Melbourne A four-nian squad of detectives has been formed to probe crime in Victorian racing.. < The new racing bureau has been, launched after months of; .negotiations between the racing industry and the police. ' , ' The head of the Victorian C. 1.8. (Detective Chief Superintendent Phil Bennett) said yesterday the bureau will investigate any criminal activiSr in any section of the inustry.
“They will look at everything from pickpockets to
doping horses,’’ he said. The only aspect not to be covered by the squad is S.P. (starting price) bookmaking, which will still be covered by the Gaming Squad. “Racing is a multi-million dollar industry and, as such, needs this specialist attention,” Superintendent Bennett said. ' ” ■-(
; Until recently illegality within the industry was the responsibility of the Consorting Squad. < “Now we will have four men concentrating solely on the industry,” said Superintendent Bennett. .
