Clothing firm ‘latest victim’
PA Wellington A Masterton firm will this week become the latest victim of closings in the clothing industry, according to the, Deputy Leader of the Opposition (Mr Lange). ■ Mr Lange said yesterday that the close was imminent, but he did not know the name of the firm.
The general secretary. of the Clothing Workers’ Federation (Mr-F. Thorn) had revealed that the Mastertbn firm was to close this week, at a meeting at Parliament yesterday morning, Mr Lange said. After meeting Mr Thorn and representatives of redundant clothing workers, Mr Lange called on the Government to convene as urgent a conference to discuss restructuring in the clothing industry: '■■■• The. Opposition tried to debate the closing of Standfast’s factory, at Wainuiomata in Parliament yesterday afternoon, but its request to adjourn the House was rejected by the Speaker (Sir Richard-Harrison). He. ruled it was not a matter requiring Parliament’s urgent attention:; . • ; Earlier,: Mr F. M.. Colman (Lab.) Pencarrow) tabled a notice of motion calling 1 , oh the Government to abandon its “discredited policy forthwith,, or at least until such time as alternative policies and employment opportunities for affected workers are put in place.” . Mr Lange said it was quite apparent that restructuring was taking plice in an “uncontrolled and destructive” fashion. “Workers, management and the Government need to meet urgently to take a close look at precisely what is happening, and tq epnsid-
er ways of minimising some of the disastrous effects,” Mr Lange said. The Government had talked about “retraining and relocation assistance,” but so far'not a single clothing worker had been assisted.
Mr Lange also attacked the Government’s handling of N.A.F.T.A., saying there had been a total failure to protect New Zealand interests. . ;
He said the . Opposition was- determined to continue its assault on the Government’s economic theories “until such time as National shows signs of having a social conscience.”
