Israel to boost villages on Arab West Bank
NZPA-Reuter Jerusalem The Israeli Government has decided to build six new Jewish settlements on the occupied West Bank of Jordan, Government officials have said. Final approval came in a Cabinet meeting which confirmed an earlier decision by the Cabinet’s defence committee. The Deputy Prime Minister (Mr Yigael Yadin) protested against three of the settlements, planned for the heavily Arab-populated West Bank mountains, but , the Cabinet rejected his protest.
The six are part of 10 settlements the Prime Minister (Mr Menachem Begin) has said will complete his Government settlement programme, boosting the total number of Jewish outposts on the West Bank to 85. Three of the settlements were planned for the sparsely populated Jordan Valley, where most Israelis agree that the string of settlements serves as a barrier to infiltration across the nearby cease-fire line with Jordan. Mr Yadin did not object to those outposts. He could carry his appeal
a step further to the Foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament, but Mr Begin’s Likud Party controls a majority on the committee, and it would probably be rejected there as well.
The United States and Egypt object that the settlements violate international law about occupation and say that the settlements are obstacles to the stalled Palestinian autonomy talks.
Israel rejects the legal argument and says the settlements are an essential element in its defence system.
