Less use of cane urged

PA' Wellington To cane or not to cane — that was the issue that took the heaviest beating at the Post Primary Teachers’ Association annual conference yesterday. Corporal punishment in secondary schools has been debated at the conference for the last 20 years, but it went ■. to the unprecedented step yesterday of being settled by regional ballot. The ballot was called after the recommendation was narrowly defeated by a verbal vote and show of hands. Delegates were granted one vote in the ballot for each teacher in their branch area. The move was again defeated, by 6177 votes to 5417, with 220 abstentions. The association’s punishment policy — that schools work towards the abandonment of corporal punishment by resorting to ...viable alternatives — therefore remained unchanged.
