Younger farmers

NZPA Canberra New Zealand and Australian farmers are generally younger than their > counterparts in other Western nations. The Bureau of Agricultural ' Economics said yesterday that the median age of Australian farmers at 45 years was less than the 53 years of farmers in the United States and the European Economic Community, and the 48 years for Canada, but slightly greater than New Zealand at 43 years.

From 1961 to 1976 the number of Australian male farmers declined from 257,929 to 189,438, a fall of 27 per cent. • Over the same period total employment of males in Australia increased from 3,165,927 to 3,717,603 or by 17 per cent. Thus there was a relatively large decline in the number of farmers over a period when total male employment increased substantially, the bureau said in its quarterly review.
