Truxtun visit opposed
PA Wellington Campaigners against the visiting nuclear-powered U.S.S. Truxtun have formed a new group to oppose the warship’s arrival in Wellington Harbour next month. The group will be known as Canwar, and is similar to a group of the same name formed to oppose the last visit by the Truxtyn, in 1976. The name Canwar is an acronym for Coalition Against Nuclear Warships. The coalition includes Friends of the Earth (VVellington), the Wellington Peace Squadron, Greenpeace, for Nuclear Disarmament, the Values Party, World Peace, Peace News, the
Victoria University Students’ Association and the Wellington Society of Friends.
TRe group says it has a two - pronged policy against the visit of the Truxtun.
The visit would pose an unacceptable environmental and health threat, and it would inescapably entangle New Zealand in the nuclear consequence of world power rivalry, said the Canwar spokesperson, Ms Wendy Walker.
