Perfect records for three netball teams

By

KEVIN TUTTY

Three teams, 'including the defending champion, Canterbury, have perfect records after the second day of the national netball tournament at the Hagley Courts yesterday.

Auckland, tipped as the side most likely to end Canterbury’s reign if that should come about, and Rotorua, are the other sides with three wins from three games. Rotorua has twice had narrow squeaks. On the first day it just managed to edge out King Country by two points, and in its morning game yesterday it sneaked in front of Waikato by a single goal. Wellington, expected to be a difficult team for the favourites to beat, faltered yesterday morning against King Country. In a see-saw game King Country was ahead by a goal, 25-24, at the final whistle. Auckland and Canterbury both had two good wins yesterday. In its first game Auckland beat Canterbury Country which was well below the form it displayed against Canterbury in an exciting game the previous day. Canterbury showed improved form to beat Manawatu and Hutt Valley, but Auckland needed all its experience to keep ahead of an eager young Otago side. At one stage Otago got to with- ; in a goal of Auckland at 1514, but the controlled and precise play of the Aucklanders slowly gave them the advantage. Rain fell during most of : yesterday’s play making con- ' ditions difficult but the general standard of ball hand- : ling was excellent. •
