Upset to wildlife

Sir, — I should like to support G. Empson (August 20) in his complaint about the presence of vehicles, particularly off-the-road types, in the Ashley River estuary. All winter there is •J continual interference with the birdlife by duckshooters and then as the birds are about to breed in early spring an influx of whitebaiters with dogs occurs coincident with the arrival of the rare Arctic waders. About the time the whitebait season ends the summer holidays begin with the inevitable appearance of beach buggies. Few people seem aware that the estuary of the Ashley and its immedi* ate environs provides a feeding and breeding habitat for over 80 species of birds and is one of the finest areas in the country for their observation. I believe that these creatures are entitled to sanctuary in this superb estuary and that they should be protected from careless and unnecessary interference.—Yours, etc., K. C. HARRISON. August 22, 1980.
