Taieri flood victims
Sir, — Thank you for your article of August 20 on the Taieri flood disaster — a stern reminder of the continuing tragic- plight of a whole farming community deprived of its living as well as its homes. It seems strange that a Government which permits one individual to collect $750,000 from its own lottery can limit to $1 0 0,000 its subsidy to a whole district of 40 families. It is equally strange that after a call to county councils to mount public appeals to help the victims, only the smallest in this area, Mount Herbert, has responded. Why not dur two most populous counties, Waimairi and Paparua, even our Christchurch City Council? If ever our Waimakariri broke its banks and inundated our town supply dairy farms and market gardens, it would be disastrous for everyone, urban and rural. Can our councils not identify with our stricken neighbours and at least provide an opportunity for public donations to a province which has sprung to the rescue of its people so wholeheartedly and so often in recent National disasters. —Yours, etc.,
V.F. JOBBERNS. August 24, 1980.
