Manslaughter verdict

PA Gisborne A jury found an Auckland man. guilty of manslaughter but not guilty of murder when its verdict was returned in the High-Court at Gisborne. The accused, Donald Cleaver Kelsey, aged 25, a freelance commercial artist, was remanded in custody to August 29 to appear in the High Court at Auckland for sentence.

Kelsey was charged with the murder of Gary Allan Goddard near the latter’s Cape Runaway home on the night of March 28.

The jury heard evidence from 40 Crown and defence witnesses to support the Crown case that during an argument Kelsey hit Goddard several times on the head with a stick and hid the body and the defence contention that it was a case of self-defence after Goddard had flown into a rage and had swung a shotgun at Kelsey. Mr J. A. Laurenson and Mr T. G. Stapleton conducted the Crown case. Mr P. A. Williams and Mr A. D. Banbrbok appeared for Kelsey. ■ ;
